How delivery works

  • The Panama Canal recorded 13,404 transits in fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 to September 2025), and many of those ships take on stores while they wait to transit.
  • Ships at the Pacific and Atlantic anchorages can take frozen beef by launch before they transit. Terminals at Balboa, Rodman, Cristóbal, Manzanillo and Colón take delivery at the berth through our local partner chandlers.
  • US beef reaches Panama in reefer containers with the USDA export certificate Panama requires. Our partner in port handles customs and ship-stores clearance.

Why ships provision in Panama

  • Waiting time at anchorShips queue at the Balboa and Colón anchorages before their transit slot, which leaves time to deliver stores by launch.
  • Cruise homeporting on the Pacific sideThe Amador Cruise Terminal opened on March 26, 2024 and takes ships of up to 5,000 passengers, with voyages that start and end in Panama City.
  • Transshipment hubs on both coastsContainer lines exchange cargo at Balboa and Rodman on the Pacific and at Manzanillo, Colón Container Terminal and Cristóbal on the Atlantic.
  • Fishing and tanker trafficTuna and shrimp fleets work out of Vacamonte, and crude tankers load at Chiriquí Grande and Charco Azul on the trans-Panama pipeline.
